Toshiba’s Desktop External Hard Drive offers you both extra storage space, and a comprehensive yet easy-to-use data backup and sync solution. The Toshiba 1.0 TB Drive can handle even the largest digital libraries – it can store up to 200,000 photos, or 250,000 music files, or 380 hours of video. With just a few clicks you can create a digital safety net to help protect files on your computer or other storage devices. Our dual connectivity design lets you choose between the USB interface or the faster eSATA interface for your data transfer needs. A built-in On/Off switch allows you to power down your drive when not in use to save energy. The slim design and small footprint help save your desktop space both at work and at home. The Backup software lets you back up your entire system (including attached storage devices) or specific file types (e.g. music files) on any internal or external drive attached to your system. The powerful Restore feature allows you to quickly restore files from any point in the backup history. You can even restore files based on selected criteria, such as name, date, and file extension. Bi-directional synchronization helps keep files on two sync targets up-to-date, no matter which target has been modified. For added convenience, you can schedule your backup and sync tasks to automatically run at your desired day and time. The Drive Monitor will monitor your Toshiba drive and let you know when it is getting full. These software features are preloaded in your Toshiba drive and run directly from the drive without requiring installation on your computer.
Customer Review
I bought this 2TB desktop external drive to take advantage of the eSata/USB combo port on my Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop (with an i7 quad-core processor). I use this drive to back up over 500GB of files, ranging from JPEG picture files to large video files.
The first thing I did when I got the drive was to reformat it as an NTFS drive — which I highly recommend everyone do the same. There’re only two files on the drive, an autorun.inf file and an icon file for the drive. Just save them on your desktop, right-click the drive icon in Windows Explorer, and choose format. NTFS is the only format you can use under Vista or Win7. Just accept the default parameters and do a quick format. In my case, it literally took just 2 seconds! With NTFS, you’ll be able to store files bigger than 4GB, something you can’t do with the factory-default FAT32 file system.
The drive was otherwise super easy to set up. Because this is a desktop external drive, not a portable drive, it requires the included AC adapter. Unlike many other external drives, this one has a power button (in the back), so no need to unplug the power when you’re not using the drive, as with drives from Seagate and Maxtor, among others.
The drive is super-fast over the eSata connection. Note that only a USB 2.0 cable is included; I bought my eSata cable at Best Buy. Copying a big folder of over 200GB files, a mix of big and small files, yielded an average write speed of 65MB/sec. Wow, that’s really impressive, isn’t it? Of course, nowhere near the 300MB/sec (3Gb/s) theoretical speed of eSata, but first, the Toshiba uses a 3.5″ 5,400RPM drive, so throughput is limited by the spin speed, and second, I use it with a laptop, so I imagine there should be some speed gain if I used it on a fast desktop, speaking from experience with other external hard drives. Anyway, I’m happy with the speed, as it’s 4 to 6 times what I used to get with USB 2.0 drives (on average).
Finally, I have had no problems whatsoever with my drive. It’s quiet and stays cool. It also looks really stylish, and doesn’t take up much physical desktop space. I own many other Toshiba drives and they’ve always been super-reliable under heavy use, so I imagine this drive will last me a long time, too — even though the internal drive itself, in my case, is made in South Korea.
I highly recommend this drive to anyone needing lots of space but not needing a RAID setup.
This drive is criminal, it has stolen hours of my life that I will never get back. – M. Place –
One star is way too high for this product. I made the mistake choosing to backup my files instead of just copying them over. They now exist on the hard drive and are completely out of reach from any of the 6 computers I use. They are.RIM files which are not recognized by any prgram other than the Backsoft garbage that came with the unit. Even it will not restore the files I attempted to save. I hate this drive so much that I am light headed as I type. It is a struggle not to use the numerous amount of swear words on the tip of my tounge while writing this. In addition, I have spoken with Toshiba 4 times and their employees could not be less familiar with this product if they tried. Worthless is a genourous overstatment regarding anyone at a Toshiba 800 number. When a previous reviewer mentioned that they are buying another hard drive as I gift, it dawned on my that it would be a great gift for someone that I hate and want to inflict mental and time wasting hell on.
destroyed my music and videos – Braylon Vaughn Gurnell –
Ever since I put my music on this hard drive all of my music skips and my movie files are all corrupted.
